Microbiome Testing Kits

How Tiny Health Achieved Zero Kitting Errors with Barcode-Validated Assembly

Precision Kitting for At-Home Testing

Tiny Health provides at-home microbiome testing kits that families use to understand gut health from birth. Each kit contains between 5 and 30 individual components — collection swabs, vials, instructions, return packaging, and prepaid shipping labels — all of which must be assembled with absolute accuracy.

Before working with Founders 3PL, Tiny Health managed kitting in-house. The operational burden of assembling complex kits, managing component inventory, and coordinating specimen return logistics was consuming resources that should have been directed toward product development and customer support.

Since moving to Founders 3PL, Tiny Health has maintained a zero-error kitting record while reducing shipping costs through negotiated carrier contracts and loading dock receiving.

Barcode-Validated Assembly

Every Tiny Health kit contains components that must be matched precisely — a wrong swab type or missing return label renders the entire kit unusable. Founders 3PL developed custom barcode validation software that scans every component during assembly, preventing duplicate or incorrect items from entering a finished kit.

This scan-based validation replaced the manual checklists Tiny Health used during self-fulfillment. The system flags exceptions immediately, ensuring that no kit ships until every component has been verified against the bill of materials.

Return Tracking Integration

Tiny Health's kits include prepaid return packaging so customers can send specimens back to the lab for analysis. This creates a two-leg logistics problem: the outbound kit shipment and the inbound specimen return must both be tracked and linked.

Founders 3PL implemented linked tracking numbers so that outbound and return shipments are associated in Tiny Health's system. When a specimen arrives at the lab, the company can trace it back to the original kit shipment and the customer who received it.

Shipping Cost Reduction

When Tiny Health fulfilled in-house, they lacked negotiated carrier rates and loading dock infrastructure. Inbound component shipments were delivered via standard residential delivery, adding cost and handling time.

At Founders 3PL's facility, inbound freight arrives at a dedicated loading dock, and outbound shipments benefit from volume-negotiated carrier contracts. These structural advantages reduced Tiny Health's per-kit shipping cost without any change to service level or delivery speed.

Transparent Cost-Plus Pricing

Tiny Health's kitting operations involve variable labor depending on kit complexity — a 5-component kit takes less assembly time than a 30-component research kit. Founders 3PL bills actual labor time at cost plus a fixed 20% margin, so Tiny Health pays proportionally for the work performed.

This eliminates the per-kit flat fees that other 3PLs charge, which penalize simple kits and subsidize complex ones. Tiny Health sees exactly what each kit costs to assemble, ship, and track.

We needed a fulfillment partner that could handle the precision our kits demand. Every component matters — a missing swab or wrong label means a family can't complete their test. Founders 3PL built a validation system that catches errors before they happen.
